Preachers and poets have made much of the fickleness of the crowds who form the backdrop to the story of Holy Week. In this book Tony Dickinson asks how far this fickleness reflects reality and how far it is a fantasy induced by failure to engage fully with the Gospel narratives. Interwoven with this analysis are depictions of three imagined encounters that might have taken place during the week leading up to the Crucifixion, two involving protagonists in the Gospel narratives and a third introducing a fictional member of the Jewish authorities.
